A Bloody Poor Mans Holiday

The Hoppicker Children

“Look Charlie look Shill” said dad at last “it’s Binsted”. “Good job too “said mum. “I thought we would never get here, it’ll be dark soon”. “Oh leave off Mima, don’t start” dad replied. Charlie and me scrambled to the top of the cart straining to see.

In the middle of the road was a sign post sticking out of a mound of earth. We were at the cross roads to the little village of Binsted Alton Hants. Directly in front was a village school built high on a hill? There was a flight of steps leading up to it, a hand rail to the right of them. To the right of that, there was a large tree, its exposed roots dangling from the bank like a giant octopus.

Directly at the side of the school a narrow road wound its way upwards towards the church and the kings arms pub.
